A RICH AND
COLORFUL HISTORY

Situated between Poydras Market and the terminating point of the New Basin Canal, the South Market site is both historic and important. The area, known as the Faubourg St. Mary or the American Sector allowed for goods to be brought directly to shops and warehouses in the area. Its ideal positioning as a commercial hub made it the perfect home for a wide variety of establishments, including the influential Shakespeare’s Iron Factory owned by future mayor Joseph Shakespeare. Later, it became a thriving performance hub, home to notable theatres such as the Shubert and Lafayette.
